初夏の気分 Feels like early summer

 今朝は良く晴れて日差しが強いなかでの散歩でした。タイガは今朝は公園ではなく住宅街を歩くことにしました。タイガが年をとってからは、ワンコの行きたいところへ私がついて行っています。今朝は隣の６丁目。わずかに残っている畑の横を通りました。

A fine morning with strong sun light, which reminded me of an early summer morning.  Taiga wanted to walk through the neighbourhood this morning, instead of going to the park.  As Taiga became old, I have been allowing her to choose whatever direction she wanted to go.  This morning, we walked through the neighbouring district where there was a farm field - one of the very few left in our area.

ここは孤高の美しいケヤキの木を眺められるので、私の好きな通り道です。

This path is my favourite walk, since I love looking at this solitary ancient tree from a distance - a Japanese zelkova.

新緑の葉っぱが朝日を浴びてキラキラしています。

The new leaves were glittering in the morning sun.

その近くの民家では、数週間前に見たオリープの幼果そっくりの実が色づき始めていました。ブログ友の海月ファームさんに教えてもらったのですが、これは「ウスギモクセイ（薄黄木犀）」と言うのだそうです。他所では見たことのない珍しい花木です。

Nearby, I saw the very rare variety of the fragrant olive tree with fruits on it.  I learnt about this version several weeks ago, when a blogger friend told me about it.

うちの珍しい植物は、西洋サンシュユ（コーネリアンチェリー）のカザンラク。普通のコーネリアンチェリーよりも実が大きく、またデザート用になるほど甘味と香があるそうです。将来、たくさん生ったら生食用だけでなくジャムにもしたいです。

This is my rare tree - a cornelian cherry tree 'Kazanlak', developed in Bulgaria.  Its fruits are larger than normal cornelian cherries, and they are sweet and fragrant, suitable for dessert use.  I am so looking forward to actually seeing the fruits.

リンゴのグラニースミスの蕾が膨らんできました。昨日までは中心の一番大きな蕾に、ピンク地に白いスジがらせん状に入っていて、とても綺麗でした。

The flower buds of Granny Smith apple are getting close to opening.  They are so pretty.  Until yesterday, the largest bud in the middle had white spiralling streaks against the backdrop of deep pink.

「紅の夢」の蕾は遅れがちですが、だんだんと赤味が見えてきました。

The red-flesh apple, 'Kurenai-no-Yume' is way behind Granny Smith, but starting to show the red petals.

私があまり植物のことに没頭しているので、タイガがつまらなさそうな顔をしています。

As I was totally absorbed in observing the plants, Taiga was trying to catch my eyes.

桜は咲いたけど Cherry blossoms at last

今年の桜は随分と遅い開花でした。しかも雨がやっと止んだと思ってもどんより曇り空で、くら～い雰囲気です。帰宅してカメラの中の映像を見て、ここまでくすんだ色だったのかと驚いたくらいでした。

 I cannot remember a cherry blossom season in Tokyo starting so late.  Moreover, the weather is wet and cold.  With the grey sky for a background, the cherry blossoms are looking rather dull - I could not believe the colours when I came home and looked into the photos in my camera.

石神井川を渡って城北中央公園へ行きました。

We crossed the river to walk in the central part of the Johoku Park.

寒いなかでも、あちこちで花見をしている人たちで賑わっていました。

It being Saturday, there were lots of people enjoying picnics under the cherry trees in spite of the cold weather.

ケヤキの木はもう新緑が始まっています。

The Japanese zelkova trees are already turning green - their leaves normally come out after the cherry blossom season and this year is unusual.

公園上のほうへ移動。コナラの根元のハナニラが綺麗でしたが、暗い日なので写りがイマイチ。

We moved to the higher ground of the park.  Lilac-coloured Ipheion flowers were beautiful but my camera does not do justice on such a dark day.

ハナニラを眺めながら休んでいたら、バーニーズのレックスが通りかかりました。

As we were having a rest, Rex, a male Bernese Mountain Dog, passed by.

タイガは耳をぺったんこにしてレックスの飼い主さんに挨拶。この後あちこち歩いて桜の写真を撮りましたが、どれも暗いので省略です。

Taiga used to play with Rex when he was just a puppy.  Now he is a heavy giant and Taiga prefers to greet Rex's dad instead.  After saying good-by to Rex, we walked about more taking photos of cherry trees but they turned out to be gloomy.

ゴールドクリロー Golden Christmas Rose

これはネット通販のサイトからの説明と写真です。3月中旬に初めてみて、購入をずっと迷っていました。10年くらい前に買った一連のダブル咲きゴールドクリローが全て、春を待たずに枯れてしまったからです。

I found this on the internet around the middle of March this year and I have been wondering if I should buy this plant or not.  About 10 years ago, I was totally enamoured by golden Christmas roses with double flowers.  I bought quite a lot in one season but they all died before the arrival of spring.  It says "Golden Christmas rose with double flowers, photo taken on March 4th, 2024".

上の苗が今日届きました。ネット上で見た写真は、3月4日付のものなので、花は咲き終わっていることを覚悟で注文しました。箱から出してみると、乾燥防止のために丁寧な梱包がなされていて、肥料もおまけで付いていました。

At last, I ordered it 2 days ago and it arrived this afternoon.  The photos above were taken on 4th March, so I knew that the flowers would be all finished.  I had a strange curiosity to see how the beauty looked after its peak.  They sent me a free packet of fertiliser, too.

花は予想どおり終わっていて、株自体はネットの写真の当時よりも育っています。

As expected, the flowering was over and the plant itself has grown quite a bit since the time of the photos in the shop.

開花後でも、各花が綺麗な黄色を保っています。クリスマスローズは普通、開花後に色が後退して灰色、茶色、緑色などになってしまうのが残念です。その点この苗は私の中ではとても優秀だと評価しています。

To my joy, I found that even after flowering, what was left retained the original golden colour.  The problem with Christmas roses normally is that, after flowering is over, the colour turns into dirty grey, brown or green.  This plant is free of that shortcoming.

お店の写真の３枚目から、全部で花が４個咲くようだと思っていましたが、どれも満足に咲いた後です。クリスマスローズは、苗が小さいうちの２番花以降は貧相な花になりがちですが、この苗はその問題はなかったようです。

From the 3rd photo of the seller, I could tell that there would be 4 flowers this season and, seeing the plant in the flesh, I can see that each flower was of decent size -  another shortcoming with a young Christmas rose plant is that the size of the flower from the 2nd one onwards becomes drastically small.

株元をみると、清潔で充実した苗であることが確認できます。

The plant seems quite robust.

開花後の花色の後退について、うちのこぼれ種から育った苗の花が典型的です。現在、種が育ってきている段階ですが、花びら（厳密にはガク）が緑色っぽくなっています。対して、今日届いた苗の花は、種の熟し具合は同じでも綺麗な黄色を保持しています。

A comparison with my existing golden Christmas rose, regarding the changing colour after flowering.  The existing flowers have gone quite green, even though the developing seeds are of the same maturity.

これから苗の成長期なので、直ぐに植え付けました。クリローの右隣のニラのような葉っぱは、ピンクのヒガンバナです。

To take advantage of the growing season, I planted it in the soil immediately. 

おまけで付いてきた肥料をさっそく活用。

The complimentary fertiliser will help the growth.

通路の横なので、種の採取が容易になります。お店に入荷して以降の受粉だとすると、商品棚で近くに並んでいた苗の花粉かもしれませんが、数年後にどんな花が咲くのか楽しみです。

By planting it next to the walking space, I will be able to observe the development of the seeds.  Since the first flower was quite young as of March 4th, pollination must have taken place after arriving at the seller's.  I am looking forward to seeing flowers in several years' time.

ノコンギク Japanese wild aster

 メルカリで購入したピンクの花のノコンギクの苗が届きました。昨年末にもピンク花のノコンギク苗を買っていますが（23年12月20日の記事）、その時の品種は「桃山」でした。今回のは同じピンクでも、若干、雰囲気が異なっています。今までネットで見た写真から推測すると、今回の苗は「桃仙」ではないかと思います。以下の２枚の写真は、出品者さんの庭で昨年咲いた様子を撮ったものだそうです。

I bought pink wild aster again on the internet, in addition to the one that I got in late December (Dec 20th, 2023 posting).  In Japan, there are two varieties of pink wild asters and I got one of them in December last year.  The one I bought this time, I think, is the other variety.  These two pink varieties are extremely hard to come by - they are mainly traded as 'collectors' items' between individual gardeners.

The following two photos were taken by the private seller when the flowers were in full bloom last year.

環境が適していれば、こんなに多花性になるようです。うちに元からある濃い紫色のノコンギクとのコントラストが楽しみです。

届いた箱から中身を出してみると、何とも丁寧なメッセージが添えられていました。

サイトでは「3苗」との表示でしたが、密な抜き苗なので、実質は数株分あります。

On the seller's page, it said '3 plants' but they look a lot more than 3.

玄関横の柑橘苗の根元に植えました。ここは風通しが良いので元気に育つでしょう。

Since we have had several days of rain, the ground is saturated enough.

They will grow vigorously in this sunny spot with good exposure to wind.

以下の２枚は、去年の12月に植えた「桃山」です。冬の間に根が張ったようなので、葉っぱがイキイキしてきました。よく見ると、今日届いた苗とは葉の外見が違うような気がします。今度の秋には両方とも開花するはずなので、花を比べるのが楽しみです。

These are the plants from December last year.  They have had enough time to spread the roots so they should grow fast in the coming months.  Their leaves look different from those of today's plants and I am hoping that they are two different varieties of pink asters.  I am looking forward to seeing the flowers in autumn this year.

良い天気 Nice weather

 今日は朝から快晴。空気は冷たくても心地よい寒さでした。毛皮をまとったワンコには暑いのか、早朝散歩から帰ったタイガは、日向の座布団ではなく木陰の石の上で座っていました。

We had a clear blue sky all day today.  The air was crisp and pleasant.  After coming home from the early morning walk, Taiga, with her fur coat, found it too warm and sat on the stone under a shade instead of the cushion in the sun.

ゴールドクリスマスローズの第一花は、たぶん今がピークです。

The golden Christmas rose flower is at its peak of beauty now.

これはこぼれ種からの苗とは言っても、初期のゴールド苗の特徴が良く出ています。すなわち、花茎は短くて直立性、花は横向きに咲いて通常のクリスマスローズのような下向きではありません。

Although this is a seedling from a bought plant (which died out within a few months of purchase), it has all the hallmarks of the golden variety in its early days.  After it was introduced into Japan from the UK, a lot of nurseries bred them with orientalis varieties and they began to lose the original traits, i.e. short and upright flower stems, with flowers holding their heads up instead of looking crestfallen.  

オシベの熟し方がこれくらいの段階が、一番綺麗な開花状態だと思っています。

I like flowers with the stamen at this stage.

久しぶりの良い天気なので、午後の早い時間帯に追加の散歩で公園へ行きました。

As it was such a nice day, we had an extra walk in the early afternoon and headed for the park.

売店のある広場に着くとバーニーズのジャム君とレックスがいました。ジャム君はタイガより１歳下、レックスは４歳くらい下ですが、みんな成長して落ち着いてしまいました。

When we arrived at the space with table and benches, we met two Bernese, Jam and Rex.  Jam is one year younger than Taiga, and Rex 4 years younger.  They used to play with Taiga boisterously but now they are all grown up and mild-mannered.

始めて会った小さな柴の女の子。近年の柴は初対面でも愛嬌をふりまく子が多くて、甲斐犬との違いを感じてしまいます。城北公園で会える甲斐犬の数は、まーったく増えないです。

A new face: very friendly female miniature Shiba Inu.  I notice that Shiba Inus are becoming friendly dogs in recent years, which increases their popularity.  In contrast, Kaiken dogs are very reserved and the number of Kais that I meet in this park has remained basically unchanged over the years: Kanta, Hina and Sena, apart from Taiga.

サツマイモ栽培に挑戦 Planning to grow sweet potatoes

 今朝は刺すような冷たい風が吹いていて、公園で長散歩をさせられた後は凍えてしまいました。そんなんことはお構いなしのタイガは写真撮影に協力する気もなく、そっぽ向いてばかりでした。ガンコなばあさんのようです。

We had freezing cold wind as we were having a long walk in the park this morning.  It did not bother Taiga with her thick coat.  As usual, she was not interested in posing for the camera.

遠くに他所のワンコの姿を見てやっと動かなくなったところをパチリ。

I managed to get a photo as her attention was caught by the sight of a dog in the distance.

注文してあった「蒸し器」が届いたので、さっそくサツマイモで試してみることにしました。本格的な蒸し器を買うとかさばってしまいますが、これは蒸す部分だけを売っているもので、あとは既存の鍋とフタを使います。深さがあるので、茶碗蒸しにも利用できます。

イモは今日スーパーで見かけたのですが、前から一度は育ててみたいと思っていたものです。

This 'steamer' arrived yesterday and I decided to try it with sweet potatoes.  When you buy a set of steamer, it takes up a lot of space in your cupboard.  With this piece, you buy only the missing part, since you already have the pot and the lid.  Moreover, this piece has a depth enough to accommodate cups to cook steamed egg recipes.

左は今日はじめて見た石川県産「五郎島金時」、右は紫芋。私はねっとりタイプのサツマイモが嫌いなので、育てるなら金時芋と思っていました。ただし、紫芋はねっとりタイプでもアントシアニン摂取が魅力です。均一に蒸しやすいよう、太さが似たものを選びました。

I saw these two varieties of sweet potatoes in the shop today.  The variety on the left is extra sweet with dry flesh.  The one on the right is the purple sweet potato.  I have always wanted to grow these myself.

左の五郎島金時の色が真っ白なのでびっくり。何度か食べたことのある鳴門金時は生でももっと黄色だったような。。。

I chose one from each variety so that the thickness would be similar for better results in steaming.

蒸し器は直径20cmの鍋用なので小さく、一度にたくさん食べられない一人暮らしにとってちょうど良いサイズです。

The size of the steamer is 20cm, small enough for me since I am a small eater.

既存の20cmステンレス鍋にぴったりです。ガラス蓋も同様。

The steamer fitted perfectly to the existing stainless-steel pot as well as the glass lid.

25分ほど蒸してできあがり。

After about 25 minutes, the potatoes were ready.

五郎島金時芋はホクホクです。鳴門金時ほどには甘栗っぽい食味ではなく、さっぱりした甘さですが、食感は鳴門よりも若干ホクホクなので、とても美味しいです。養分に乏しい砂っぽい土壌で育つという、粉質のサツマイモは昔からありますが、それを甘くしたような感じです。

紫芋のほうは予想どおりベタベタの肉質です。考えている利用法は、水分を飛ばして餡子を作り、タルトなどのフィリングにすることです。

まずは、YouTubeの動画を参考に、残った芋で芽出しをします。育て方は、大きな袋を入手できれば、やはり動画を参考に、立体栽培を考えています。

The one on the left belongs to the 'Kintoki' variety which is known for its sweetness and powdery flesh.  This particular brand I bought today was new to me but I like it better than the Naruto Kintoki variety which is more commonly available.  The purple potato was very sweet, too, and I am thinking of making a filling for tarts when I harvest my own in autumn.
