フィンガーライム Finger limes

 マイナンバーカード更新の時期なので、チャリをこいで練馬区役所へ行ったあと、ついでに家とは反対方向にある渋谷園芸本店まで足を延ばしました。行かなければよかったものを、見てはいけないものを見てしまった。フィンガーライムの新苗が入荷していました。

I had to go to the Nerima Ward Office this afternoon for some paperwork, after which I went further to visit a large plant shop.  In spite of my resolve not to buy any more new plants, since I have no more space left in my tiny garden, I happened to see what I should not have done - new finger lime plants had just come in.

この棚にある品種では、ダラムエメラルドは以前、高い苗を買って枯らしてしまいました。他は自分で育てたことのない品種ばかりです。どれも小苗で2,400円ですが、ちゃんと蕾が出ています。

Among these little plants, Durham Emerald is the only one I have had the experience of growing.  I started with 8 different varieties many years ago, but one by one they died and now I am left with only 3: Mia Rose, Rick's Red, and a white seedling.  

The plants on this shelf are quite small - about 40cm.

こちらの苗は樹高は同じくらいでも、もう少し充実した枝ぶりで蕾の量も多く、値段はさっきの2倍。

There was another shelf with slightly more mature plants with more flower buds, but hardly taller than the small ones.  The price of these were twice that of the smaller ones.

開花が始まっている苗もあります。

Some of them are already starting to bloom.

私の楽しみは安く小さく買って大きく育てることなので、小苗のほうばかり持ち帰りました。

現在うちで生き残っている苗は、ミアローズ、リックスレッド、実生の白実です。収穫実績のあるのは、値段が一番安く大苗で買った実生の白だけ。

I find it more fun to buy cheap, small, and grow big.  So, I brought home 3 small ones.  

こぢんまりと剪定されているので小さく見えますが、出荷直前まではもっと大きかったはずです。

They may look very small, but I can see that they were trimmed down to the current sizes just before being shipped out of the nursery.

レモンとプチマル Lemon and Kumquat

 もう４月なので庭のトゲ無しリスボンレモンを収穫することにしました。寒い冬の間、目を楽しませてくれました。

Since it is already April, I decided to pick the lemon fruits.  This tree is a thornless Lisbon lemon.  I enjoyed looking at the fruits during the cold winter months, remembering the warm summer season.

今年用の蕾が出始めているので、実を収穫して体力を開花に向けさせます。

Flower buds are already out, so picking the fruits helps direct the energy towards tree growth.

タイガは柑橘類が嫌い。

Taiga is not a fan of citrus fruits.

うちのプチマル金柑は色づきが極めて遅いです。犬の散歩中にあちこちの庭先で１月頃から色づき始めている金柑を眺めていました。

The seedless kumquat named 'Puchimaru (or Petit-maru)' ripens very late, at least in my garden.  Ordinary kumquats with seeds start ripening in late January and I have been looking at them ripen as I walked through the neighbourhood during dog walks.

青いのも全て収穫。

I picked all the fruits, again, to redirect the energy towards the tree's growth.

玄関に入ろうとしたら、「かまってよ」の視線を投げかけてきました。ごめん、かーちゃん忙しいんだわ。

As I was entering the house, Taiga threw a glance at me saying "I'm here, mom."  Sorry, I have other things to do.

去年プチマルの開花中、うちも含めて地元の他の柑橘類の開花が全て終わっていたので、100%自家受粉で結実しました。そのおかげでセールス文句どおりの種無しです。

When my kumquat tree was in bloom last summer, all the citrus plants in the neighbourhood had finished flowering.  So, the tree relied on self-pollination completely.  As a result, the fruits were free of seeds just as the advertisement says about this variety.

糖度計によると22.1%です。２年くらい前に実付きで苗が届いたとき、糖度は19%だった記憶です。じっくり収穫を待ったことで糖度が上がったのでしょう。実際に食べてみると、なるほど甘いです。しかも種が一個も入っていないので食感が良い。

The sugar content was 22.1% - one of the highest levels in citrus fruits.  Waiting to pick the fruit until April probably helped raise the sugar content.  As I ate the fruit, it really was sweet.  Moreover, it is so pleasant without seeds.

２階に置いてあるトゲ無しリスボンレモンは、無加温の部屋で越冬したあと、最近の暖かい雨を受けて新芽がどんどん伸びています。

The seedless Lisbon lemon plant on the balcony is growing vigorously, thanks to the warm rains we have had recently.  I love the new growth with dark leaves.

開花後の幼果の状態。雄花は蕾のうちから分かるので完全花だけを咲かせましたが、今のところ１個も落ちることなく着果しています。

There are many clusters of young fruits after the flowers.  I had removed all the male flowers early on and the remaining flowers self-pollinated - an experiment I wanted to try.  After the flowering was over, not one young fruit has fallen.

幼果の間で優劣がついたら減らそうと思っていましたが、どれも勢いがあるので、苗の体力を節約するために、少し間引きました。

In fact, I was waiting to see growth variation among the strong and weak but, since all of them seem vigorous, I picked some of them to conserve energy.

レモンなど Lemon etc

明日からは日中の最高気温が20℃以上に上るそうなので、室内越冬していた柑橘類を今日からバルコニーに出しました。

リスボンレモンは今も開花が続いていて、幼果が増えてきました。

According to the forecast, the maximum temperature will exceed 20℃ from tomorrow, so I have brought out the citrus trees to the balcony.  The Lisbon lemon plant has not finished flowering but small fruits are forming already.

栄養節約のために不完全花は全部取り除いてあります。

To save the plant's energy, I have removed all the flowers lacking the pistil.

室内においていた間は、花の香で天国にいる気分でした。

The perfume from the flowers was out of this world while I had this plant in my bedroom.

おととしの６月上旬に苗が来て、今年はもう初収穫にこぎつけそうです。

In less than 2 years, this plant has grown well and I am hoping to see some fruits setting this year for the first time.

フィンガーライムは、現在３本だけ残っています。これはミアローズで、かなり大きくなりました。15ミリ以上のトゲを見つけ次第、根気よく切ってきましたが、それでも痛いものは痛いです。

Of the several finger lime plants I used to have, only 3 are left.  This is Mia Rose.  As the plant grew, I have been removing all the thorns longer than 15 mm, but I continue to get painful stings when I take care of the plant.

今まで花が咲いたのを見たことありませんでしたが、いつの間にか１個だけ実が着いていました。ミアローズはピンクアイスの選抜種とされていて、ピンクアイスより大実で粒ぞろい、また中身の粒の色はより濃いピンクだそうです。

I have never seen this plant flowering but, recently, I noticed this young fruit.  Mia Rose is thought to be a selection of Pink Ice, with larger fruits, darker flesh, and uniform fruit size.

庭に置いてある鉢植えスモモのハニーハートの開花が始まりました。ここ数日の雨で花粉が流れたかも。さらに、今日の夕方からまた降り出したので、どれだけ受粉できるやら。

The potted plum tree has started to bloom.  This is a red-flesh variety called 'Honey Heart' with little tartness.  We have had several days of continuous rain, and it started to rain this evening yet again.  So, I am not sure how much pollination took place.

タイガは地べたでリラックス。ワンコにとって今日の気温は暑すぎるのか、座布団は無視で冷たい地面を好んでいます。なぜか、菊の植え込みに前足を突っ込んでいます。

Taiga sitting on the ground, instead of the cushion I place for her outside the porch door.  It was a little warm during the day and she was enjoying the cool of the soil.  I wish she would leave my chrysanthemums alone though.

リスボンレモンとキーライム Lemon and Key lime

今日は日中の最高気温が20℃と、とても暖かかったのでリスボンレモンとキーライムを部屋の外に出しました。 冬の間、無加温の南向き部屋で過ごしたものです。

It was a very warm day today with the maximum temperature reaching 20℃.  I brought out the Lisbon lemon and Key lime from the room where they had spent the winter.  The room's heater was off all the time, but it did not harm the plants.

レモンには蕾がどっさり着いています。この苗は２年前の初夏にセールで買ったもので、棒苗が到着したときの状態は、夏なのに振るい根でカラカラ、ついていた葉っぱは銀色のが３枚だけ。まるで出荷までその辺に転がっていたような状態でした。生きているのかどうか判断できるまで３か月くらいかかりましたが、今では非常に元気に育っています。

The lemon tree has lots of flower buds.  I bought this plant in early summer 2 years ago.  The plant was in a miserable state and it took about 3 months before I felt that it was likely to survive.  Now, it is thriving.

昨日気づいた開花第一号。子房が僅かに肥大しているので自家受粉したようです。今年は実を着けさせたいです。

The first flower opened yesterday and it seems to have self-pollinated.  Perhaps I can expect to see some fruits this year?

こちらは実生のキーライム。スーパーで売られていた実の種を蒔いたものですが、びゅんびゅん育つので、上のほうの枝は摘心してあります。タヒチライムと同じ程度の耐寒性があるような印象です。来年の春までには充実した接ぎ穂が取れそうなので、地植えのリスボンに高接ぎしてみる予定です。

This Key lime is a seedling from the fruits I bought in a supermarket a few years ago.  It is so vigorous that I have to keep pinching the growth at the top.  The impression I get is that this plant's cold hardiness is similar to that of the Tahitian lime.

クリスマスローズ他 Christmas Rose etc

 私の園芸は果樹が主なので、花木は本当に少ないですが、そのなかでクリスマスローズは年の最初に咲く花です。とは言っても、今では２株しか残っていません。写真の赤円で囲まれた株は、かつて私が熱を上げていた八重咲きゴールドネクタリーの実生苗です。10株以上買ったのに、どれも３，４か月ほどで枯れてしまいました。この実生は、そのうちの一株からのこぼれ種が発芽したもので、去年の初開花までに５、６年かかりました。親株とは異なり丈夫です。

手前の大きな苗は、ゴールドネクタリーと同時期に買った唯一の赤花苗です。今年は蕾の数が多くてびっくりです。

Since my interest in gardening is mainly in growing fruit trees, I do not have many flowers.  However, I am always looking forward to the two Christmas roses opening, since they announce the arrival of spring (I wonder why they call it 'Christmas' rose).  

The plant in the red circle is a seedling from one of the gold Christmas rose plants that I bought some years ago.  The original plants were very delicate, and all died out within 3-4 months after purchase.  Fortunately, this plant appeared out of the ground as a tiny seedling and kept growing.  It took 5-6 years before having the first flower last spring.  

黄色のほうは実生苗ながら、しっかり八重咲きになっています。また、草姿は上の写真で見られるように、まさにゴールドネクタリー苗の花茎が非常に短い特徴を受け継いでいます。

Like its parent, it is a double flower with clear gold colour.   Its stature is also reminiscent of its parent, with a very short flower stem - about 10 cm above the ground.

ただし、シベの付け根に有るべきネクタリーは見当たりません。なので単に「ゴールド苗」と思っています。

However, the parents had gold nectarines which were very visible, but this seedling does not.  So, this is just a gold flower Christmas rose.  The parents were called 'Christmas roses with gold nectarines' and this feature was a very big deal in those days.

去年は花が１個だけでしたが、今年は蕾がもう１個あります。

When this seedling flowered for the first time last year, it had only one flower.  This year, there is another one to look forward to.

こちらは赤花のほう。他のゴールドネクタリー苗を育苗していた同じ農園からの出身で、ラベルによると片親には芳香付きゴールドネクタリーが記載されていました。少しずつ株が大きくなっているので、これも丈夫そうです。

This red flower plant was bought at the same time when I was totally bewitched by so-called 'gold nectarine Christmas roses', and it comes from the same nursery as the gold ones.  Moreover, the label said that one of the parents was a gold flower plant with fragrance.

種無しキンカンのプチマルが徐々に色づいてきています。

The kumquat fruits are ripening slowly.  This is a seedless variety and it is much more pleasant to eat without seeds.

去年は実着き苗を買って３年目でしたが、枝数が増えてその分、実も増えました。

Last year was the 3rd year after getting this plant.  The branches are maturing and I am getting more fruits now.

相変わらず座りかたがだらしないタイガ。最近シャンプーをしてムダ毛をはぶいたので、わずかに引き締まって見えます。

Taiga had a shampoo a few days ago.  Having got rid of excess fur, she looks slightly slimmer.

冬の朝 Winter morning

 昨日まではちょっと動くと汗ばむ陽気でしたが、今朝は一転、木枯らしのような風が吹いて冬らしい朝でした。散歩帰りに通りすぎた民家のクチナシの実がとても綺麗でした。

Up to yesterday, it has been unseasonably warm.  This morning, it really felt like a winter day with chilly breeze.  The gardenia tree in the neighbourhood has eye-catching, beautiful fruits.

この実はピラフご飯の色付けに使えます。一重の大輪の花が咲く品種にこういう実が生ります。今度お店で苗を見かけたら買おう。

There are many culinary uses for this fruit and I like colouring the rice when making stir fried rice.  This variety has large, single-petal flowers.  Although not as showy as the double-petal variety, the plant is attractive enough when in full bloom.  I will certainly get a plant next time I see one in the shop.

帰宅して玄関前でくつろぐタイガ。こんなに寒い日でも、退屈な家の中に入りたがらない。

Taiga relaxing near the porch.  Even on a cold morning like this, she prefers sitting here instead of coming inside, which she finds boring.

ジッと前の道を見つめてファンの方々が通るのを待っています。

She watches the street in front of the house in case her fans pass by.

私はタイガに付き合って、外でコーヒーを飲みました。コーヒーは好きな飲み物ではないけど、必要に迫られて毎日１-２杯飲んでいます。ネットで見た情報ですが、コーヒーには脳の血流を整える作用があるそうです。私は年をとってから季節の変わり目に頭痛がするようになりましたが、コーヒーを飲むことでそれが解決しました。今では飲み止めると季節に関わりなく頭痛が戻ってきます。

I had my morning coffee outside to keep her company.  Coffee is not my favourite drink but I need to take it so as to avoid getting a headache.  As I got older, I began to suffer from headaches when seasons changed.  I read an article which said that coffee helped regulate the blood flow in the head.  It worked with me, only by drinking 1 or 2 mugs a day.  Nowadays, if I stop drinking coffee, headache comes back regardless of seasons.

地植えにして初年度のリスボンレモンが色づいてきました。6個しか生っていないので、どう利用するかじっくり考えてからにします。もうスイーツ作りの動画は止めたので、今年の8月以来、一度も甘いものを食べていません。非常に体調が良くなって、夕方のジョギングも再開しました。でも、年末にかけて何かのスイーツにレモンを利用する予定です。

The Lisbon Lemon planted in the ground earlier this year has produced 6 fruits and they are becoming ripe.  I stopped making sweets in summer this year and I have not eaten any sweets since.  I used to feel tired all the time, but now I feel so great and have taken up jogging in the evening again.  However, I will use the lemons for sweets over the Christmas/New Year period.

正月用に買った寒菊。写真無しのラベルから「ピンク系」の花が咲くとは分かっていましたが、実際に咲いてみると二重咲きで、八重が好きな私にはちょっと期待はずれ。お店に残っている「きょうだい」たちはまだまだ蕾なのに、この苗は鉢増し・施肥されたからか、正月前に満開になりそうです。

I got this winter chrysanthemum for the forthcoming New Year.  When I bought it, the plant had tight flower buds.  Now growing in a large pot with fertiliser, the flowers are opening too early.  Its 'sisters' are still in the shop and their flower buds remain small and tight.

寒菊を眺めていたら、タイガがそうっとやって来ました。何の要求もせずに、ほんとにジミなワンコです。

As I was wondering over the winter chrysanthemum, Taiga approached me by stealth.  She is so unobtrusive that I sometimes wish she behaved like a demanding, talkative dog like those I see on the YouTube.  Taiga is Kaiken - very stoic and patient.
