星タンゴール Hoshi Tangor orange

 夜の雨後の様子を見るために庭を覗いたら、１個だけ生っていた「星タンゴール」の実が自然落果していました。もう４月なので完熟のはず。

It rained through the night and, when I looked into the garden first thing in the morning, I saw that the only fruit on Hoshi Tangor had fallen.  The fruit should be fully ripe in April.

雨で土がドロっぽくなっているので、トングで何とか果実を拾いました。

Since the soil was soggy, I used a pair of tongs to reach the fruit.

さっそく体重測定：237ｇ。1個だけだったので、まあまあの大きさになっています。

半割にしてみると、種が多少入っています。自家受粉しているとほぼ種無しになるのですが、今回は開花のタイミングが多品種と同時だったようです。

When I cut the fruit into half, I saw a few seeds.  This variety can be seedless if there is no other citrus varieties in bloom at the same time.  Since I grow several kinds of citrus fruit trees, it is difficult to achieve self-pollination.

糖度計によると15.9度。実際に食べてみると、強烈な甘さというよりは爽やかな甘さです。うちのブラッドオレンジのモロがまだ残っていて毎日ジュースに絞っているのですが、その濃厚な風味に慣れると、星タンゴールの食味は瓶入りジュースを飲んでいるかのような印象です。でも、肉質はゼリーっぽくて、とても美味しいです。

The sugar content is 15.9% which is quite high for an orange.  However, it did not feel that sweet when I actually ate it, probably because I am too used to eating Moro, the blood orange that I harvest a lot every winter.  However, the taste was fresh and pleasant, and the flesh was like eating jelly.

 今年も美味しいオレンジが生っています。何年か前に見た動画で、紀州犬がみかんを食べているのを思い出し、試しにタイガに差し出してみました。

Oranges are coming into season in my garden.  Some years ago, I was surprised to see a Kishuken eating a mikan (a kind of mandarin orange) on YouTube.  So, I thought of showing Taiga a couple of home-grown oranges.

ノコンギク Japanese aster

 ノコンギクのピンクの花が咲く品種「桃山」を買えました。以前からうちにあるのは濃い紫色の品種で、できればピンクのも欲しいと思っていました。この↓写真は咲いたときのイメージです。

I found Japanese aster plants with pink flowers being offered on the internet.  The variety I already have produce purple flowers and I always wanted the pink version as well.  The photo below is just the image of what is to come, since the flowering season is long past.　However, aren't they beautiful for wild flowers?

うちの紫のと同じく、花びらが長く花の中心が占める部分が小さいので、花びらの美しさが強調されます。また、咲き始めは花びらが白っぽく、咲き進むにつれて色が濃くなるのも同じです。

メ〇カリで個人同士の取引なので、届いた苗の状態は手作り感満載です。

I bought the plants on a site used by private individuals (sellers and buyers), so the goods that arrived really looked 'personal', instead of business like.  It brought a smile to my face.

サイトでは「２苗」という表示でしたが、４本送られてきました。感謝です。

The price was about 4 US dollars, including postage, and said '2 plants'.  In fact, she sent me 4 plants and I am so grateful.

梱包の際に根っこを湿らせてありましたが、念のためひと晩水につけて置いたら、翌朝には葉っぱがシャキッとしていました。

I left them in a bowl of water overnight and the leaves looked crispy in the morning.

地植えで冬を越せば、春までには根っこが張っているはずです。

The roots should spread well during the forthcoming winter.  I am so looking forward to seeing the flowers next autumn.

この時期、野鳥のエサが少ないのか、タイガの向こうに写っている種無しスダチが齧られていました。キンカンとは違い甘い果実ではないのに、皮が薄いので突くのが簡単だからでしょうか。ちょっとショック。

One of the seedless Kabosu was partially eaten by a wild bird.  They must be really short of food in winter.  The skin of the fruits is thin and I hope they will enjoy them but, unfortunately, these are not as sweet as the seedless kumquat fruits.

種無しキンカンの「ぷちまる」は、苗を２-3年前に買って以来10号鉢のままです。今年はじめて成長を感じられる枝ぶりになりました。

The seedless kumquat has grown well since this spring.  I bought the plant a few years ago and it hardly grew until now.  This year, it has a decent amount of fruits.

まだ小粒ですが、２月頃の完熟に向けて徐々に実が大きくなります。とても甘くて美味しい品種。何年も前にぷちまる苗が一般に発売された当初、大変期待して買ったことがありますが、その当時のぷちまると今のとでは、味、実のサイズ、豊産性で別物のような印象です。いったん人気が無くなったあと、品種改良がなされたのでしょうか。

The fruits are still small but they should continue to grow towards their maturity in February.  They are very sweet, just like the normal kumquat, but these are seedless.  So, it is very nice when eating fresh, as well as candied versions.

柚子 Yuzu

 朝の散歩中にある家の前を通りかかったら呼び止められました。庭先の柚子を収穫したところなので少し持っていきなさい、ということでした。その住宅街は時々通るだけで、面識もない人からそう言われてびっくりしましたが、すぐに話し込んでしまいました。その方は石川県の出身で、富山県出身の私とは気候や地理的なことなど共通の記憶がありました。私より年輩の方でここではもう50年も暮らしているそうで、私の27年よりずっと長いですが、この地域に共通の知り合いがあることも分かり話が盛り上がりました。

で、柚子と一緒に玄関前に咲いているサザンカの花も渡されました。地元の名士だったある人が、わざわざ京都のお寺から枝をもらってきて挿し木で増やしてこのあたりに広めたそうです。私はサザンカの挿し木に挑戦する意欲はないので、コップに入れて切り花として眺めます。

During our morning walk, I was stopped by a stranger who was working in her garden.  She had just picked some fruits from her yuzu tree and invited me to take some.  Since I had never seen her before, I was surprised at first.  However, as we chatted, we discovered that she also came from the Hokuriku region (she is from Ishikawa Prefecture, and I from Toyama Prefecture which lies next to Ishikawa).  She has lived in this area for 50 years, while I have been here for 27 years.  Moreover, we learned that we have mutual acquaintances in this area.

She also gave me some flowers from her sasanqua tree.  A person of some standing in this area brought cuttings from a famous sasanqua tree of a temple in Kyoto, and propagated and distributed the variety among his friends.

柚子を半割にしてみると、本柚子独特の香が広がりました。ジュースにするのに絞ったら、さすがに種ゴロゴロです。蜂蜜と一緒に飲むと美味しいです。

When I cut one of the fruits, the powerful aroma spread immediately.  I made a glass of juice with honey added.

お礼にうちの種無しカボスを後で持って行きました。10号鉢で管理していたときは毎年数個ずつしか成らなかったけど、地植えにしたら豊産性になりました。種がないと本当に楽です。

In return, I took some of my seedless kabosu to my new acquaintance.  I used to grow this tree in a pot and it produced only about 5 fruits every year.  Now growing in the ground, it has become prolific.

種無しスダチも地植えにしました。

I planted the potted seedless sudachi in the ground a few days ago.

つい一昨日まで門のそばに鉢植えで置いてあったものです（今はバラのハンザ）。

この場所の土は掘りにくいので、苗はあまり大きくなれないかもしれません。でも、苗は10号鉢でガマンの限界に来ていて、来年以降はそのままでは衰弱してしまいそうな段階だったので、以前よりは環境改善になったかも。実は色づくにつれてサイズが大きくなり、今では小ミカンほどになっていて、目を楽しませてくれます。

The spot I planted it is not roomy since the ground there is particularly hard to dig.  Nevertheless, its living condition must be better than being in a pot which was getting far too small for the roots.  Also, sudachi is a compact tree.

You are supposed to consume sudachi while the fruits are green.  However, I like watching the fruits grow larger as they turn orange - they now look like small tangerines and taste sweeter.

The chrysanthemum I bought recently continues to please my eyes.

私があちこち移動するたびにタイガも場所を変えて目にとまろうとします。甲斐犬は地味にストイックに生きます。

As I move around with my camera, Taiga changes her position so as to be noticed.  She stoically waits, in stead of demanding attention.

これからの楽しみはオレンジ。ブラッドオレンジのモロと、それに高接ぎしてあるミネオラオレンジです。モロの収穫は１月下旬から、ミネオラは３月以降。

The oranges will be the focus of attention over the next several months.  The tree is Moro (blood orange), with Minneola grafted onto it.

ハンザが開花 Hansa flowering

朝散歩から帰って水を飲んだあと、オレンジの木陰で休むタイガ。座布団が置いてある場所は午後にならないと日陰にならないので暑すぎるようです。今うちの庭は柑橘類の花の香で圧倒されるくらいです。まさに天国の気分。

２年前に買ったハマナス系のハンザが開花しています。今は株を育てたいので、一日花を眺めたら摘花しています。

Hansa has started to flower.  I bought this plant 2 years ago, and this is the first year of flowering.

世の中にはもっと美形のバラがいくらでも存在しますが、私はこのグシャグシャのハンザが一番好きです。去年もう１本追加で買って、この苗の横に植えてありますが、開花はまだ。

There are a lot of rose varieties in this world with far more beautiful flowers, but I love Hansa the best.

スモモの李王の幼果。去年の春に棒苗で届いたものが、もう鈴なりに実をつけています。李王は贈答品としても使われる品種らしいので、どんな味なのか大変楽しみです。

Riou, the plum tree that I bought in spring last year, is already producing fruits.  Riou is a popular variety used for formal presents.

ラズベリー Raspberry

 ラズベリーのジョーン・スクワイアが毎日細々と熟しています。固まって熟していると、そこだけ明りがついたようで綺麗です。

Raspberry 'Joan Squire' is continuing to ripen.  A cluster like this looks like little lanterns.

Joan Squire's fruits are large but the flowers are inconspicuous.

今日味見した中で、これが一番美味しかった。甘味、酸味ともに濃厚で秋果ならではの食味。

Of all the berries I ate today, this one was the best - strong sweetness matched by tart taste.

タイガはオヤツとお肉にしか興味なし。

Taiga is only interested in treats and meat.

地植えにした大実柚子に、２年前にモロを、去年はミネオラを、それぞれ２か所ずつ高接ぎしました。今年はこれらの各枝に１個ずつ実が生っています。

I grafted 2 twigs each of Moro and Mineora on Yuzu over the last 2 years.  Now they are starting to fruit.

で、これが大実柚子苗で実は２個。地元JAで30cmほどの挿し木苗が実着きで売られていたのを育てたものです。柑橘類のジャムは柚子が一番好きなので、これからもっと沢山生って欲しいです。

And, this is the Yuzu plant, barely 1 meter tall as yet.  Yuzu has so many uses - for savoury and sweets, as well as for fragrant bath.

カラカラ、ナバホなど Cara Cara, Navaho etc

 数年前に地植えにして以来、１個しか収穫したことのないカラカラに今年はちゃんと実が生りそうです。普通のネーブルより小ぶりだけど、ピンクの果肉はとても甘かったので楽しみです。

The Cara Cara plant with flowers starting to bloom.  This tree produced one fruit the year I planted it in the garden but, since then, no flowers at all.  So, I am looking forward to picking fruits next spring.

ブラックベリーのナバホが咲き始めました。道路側のフェンスに絡ませてあります。ケインは１本しかありませんが、東向きなので朝一の日光を浴びてよく育っています。YouTubeではスイス人のひとが、ナバホを直立形に仕立てて鈴なりにしていました。このフェンスは来年以降はハンザに利用したいので、他に移して直立式を試す予定です。

Navaho blackberry plant (just one cane) with flowers.  Unfortunately, the Osage plant died out last summer and this is the only blackberry left.

The flowers are pale pink (although they look white in the pictures) and very pretty.

数か月前にスーパーで買った２個入りのユリ根を、１個は食してもう１個は分解して鉢に植えておきました。現在一か所にだけ芽が出ています。まるでミニチュアのパイナップルのクラウン。

I planted one of the edible lily bulbs that I bought in the supermarket some months ago and now a new shoot is coming out.  It is currently looking like a miniature pineapple crown.

つい先日届いたハマナス系のハンザに蕾が出始めています。この蕾を先頭に、まだ硬い蕾が他に３つあります。

The Rugosa Hansa that arrived recently has been growing new branches and I can count at least 4 flower buds now.  I am so excited and looking forward to seeing the flowers.

私がハンザの蕾で大感激していると、退屈したタイガが寄ってきました。

As I was so absorbed with Hansa, Taiga approached me to get attention.

ワンコはブサイほど可愛い。タイガはいろんな顔で毎日私を笑わせてくれます。でも、もう少し痩せなければ。おととい狂犬病のチックンに連れて行きましたが、体重は24.9kgでした。

Taiga may not be the best looking pooch in the world, but any of her expressions are endearing to me.  However, she must slim down - I took her to the vet 2 days ago for a rabies shot and was told that she weighed 24.9kg.
