「紅の夢」 'Kurenai-no-Yume' apple

 紅の夢が咲き始めました。果肉が赤いリンゴですが、花の色も濃いとは知りませんでした。まるで洋物のクラブアップルの花を見ている気分です。花には甘い香りがあります。経済栽培している状態では、木全体がこのピンク色の花で覆われて見ごたえありそう。

The red-flesh apple variety called 'Kurenai-no-Yume' has started to flower.  The flowers are deep pink even after opening, and has a sweet perfume.  They look like crab apple flowers.  I would love to see a mature tree covered with these pretty blossoms.  

こちらは明日にも開花しそう。

These will start opening tomorrow.

今年はこの２ヵ所に花があるだけ。

For the first year of flowering, there are only two clusters of flowers.

さっそく紅玉の花粉をつけておきました。紅玉はシンクイムシの影響で木が弱っているので、実を着けさせません。

I pollinated the Kurenai-no-Yume with these Kogyoku apple flowers.  This tree was damaged by a stem borer and I want it to rest until it recovers.

グラニースミスの花は全部終わりました。

The flowers of Granny Smith are all gone.

ランの花 Orchids

芳香性エビネランが咲き始めました。苗が充実したのか、今年は去年よりも香が強いです。花の形があまりエビネランっぽくないところも気に入っています。

Ebine (Japanese Calanthe) orchid with fragrance: as the plant has matured, its fragrance has become strong.

向こうに見える地植えのは、ネットショップで買った普通のエビネランです。

The yellow flowers at the back of the photo are common Ebine that are very hardy.

花茎が今年は３本に増えました。始めから地植えでも病気にかからず強健です。上の黄色のと薄紫色のコオズ系匂いエビネは鉢植えですが、休眠期に入ったら地植えにしようと思います。

This plant has been in this spot for several years and, this year, the flower stems have increased to 3.

去年の暮から今年の正月にかけて買ったシンビジュームは、もう終わりに近づいています。もう１株の濃いピンクの花のは既に花茎を取り除いて庭に置いていますが、半日陰でちょうど良いのか葉っぱが青々してきました。

The cymbidium flowers that I bought at the end of last year are nearing the end of their season.  The plant with deep pink flowers has already been readied for the coming growth season and resting in the garden.  These two will follow soon.

この黄色の花の株は、購入当時の花茎は終わっていて、当時短いツボミの茎だったのが育って今開花中です。

These two flower stems were just tiny shoots when I bought this plant, growing next to the original flower stems that were gorgeous.

この株も購入時は短いツボミの茎が２本出ていたのが、今は下のほうに咲いています。

The tall flower stems are original ones, whereas the flowers at the bottom of the plant are from the tiny flower bud stems at the time of purchase.

グラニースミス他 Granny Smith etc

 グラニースミスがほぼ満開になりました。普通、リンゴの開花には清楚なイメージをもっていますが、この品種は花柄が大きいので近くで見るとハデハデです。

The Granny Smith is almost in full bloom.  Normally, I regard apple blossoms as delicate and modest looking, but the flowers of this variety are large and very showy.

感動している私をよそに、シラっとしたタイガ。オヤツが出ないなら、表情つくる気もなし。

Taiga is not affected by my excitement over the apple flowers.  So long as there is no treat in sight, she remains dissociated.

去年の春に買ったビルベリーが咲き始めました。「暑さに強い選抜実生苗」という内容のセールス文句どおり、去年の酷暑を果樹の木陰で元気に過ごしました。去年は米粒ほどの実が数個とれただけでしたが、今年は花数が多いので期待しています。小粒でも甘味が強かったです。

The bilberry plant I bought in spring last year is starting to flower.  This is a selection from Germany and is meant to be more heat-tolerant than usual bilberries.  True to the sales pitch, this plant endured the incredibly hot summer last year and grew stronger.  With lots of flowers this year, I might get several times more fruits than last year.

花が小さく、おまけに先すぼみの形をしているので、人口授粉しようがないです。これだけ小さいと、ムシが来たところでサイズに制限があります。どうなることやら。

The flowers are so tiny that I cannot imagine what small insects can get inside to pollinate.  Needless today, to pollinate manually is impossible.

サンショウも芽吹いてきました。料理に使うなら、葉っぱが柔らかい今がちょうど良いと思います。

The Japanese pepper plant is a deciduous citrus tree.  When the leaves are soft and fresh, as they are now, it is the best time to use them in cooking.  

この苗は「葉山椒」として180円ほどで売られていた小苗でしたが、育ってみると雌木でした。

My tree is a female plant and it produces peppercorns without male trees.  However, the fruits are far too hot for me and I use only the new leaves.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 隣の６丁目を歩いていて、久しぶりに通った小路です。両側に、雑草ではあるけど綺麗な花が満開状態でした。

ここは急斜面にある住宅地で、この写真の左側の地面とは数メートルの段差があります。私は高所恐怖症なので、めったに通らない小路ですが、今朝はタイガ様のお供で通りました。

We walked the neighbouring district and came across a narrow path with wild plants in full bloom.  This area is very hilly and the place we are standing is several meters higher than the ground level on the left in this photo.  Since I have a fear of heights, I try to avoid this path but, this morning, Taiga wanted to walk here.

普段は迷惑な雑草と思っているナガミヒナゲシですが、こうやって見ると絵になります。

I regard the common wild poppies as nuisance normally, but they looked pretty this morning in this context.

黄色のは名前を知らない山野草ふうの花でした。

The yellow flowers, too, can be found anywhere.

タイガは目の前しか見ないので、右側の数メートルの崖は気になりません。

Dogs are also scared of heights, I am told.  However, Taiga sees only what is immediately in front of her, so the cliff on the right does not bother her.

午後散歩 Afternoon walk

天気が良いので早めの午後散歩に出かけました。都立城北公園手前にある、区が管理する元畑の草地ではハナダイコンがまだ咲いています。

It was such a sunny day and we went out for an early afternoon walk.  First, we walked through the field that used to be used as a vegetable farm.  The Dame's violet is still flowering.

ここは公園というより原っぱの状態で一般に提供されているところなので、草も自然に近い状態で青々しています。フキの葉が出ているところや、チューリップの葉が密集しているところなど、昔のなごりがあります。

This field is looked after by the Ward Office, whereas Johoku Park comes under the management of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.  With less budget of the Ward Office, the grass is left almost untouched (they cut it only a few times during summer), but I like it this way.

タイガは花よりダンゴで、イネ科の雑草をサラダにしていました。

Taiga is only interested in eating the grass.

城北中央公園手前の桜並木は、もうすっかり散ってしまっています。先週末は花見客でごった返していたのが、今日は静かでした。

The cherry trees in the Johoku Park have lost most of their petals.  This place was packed with people last weekend, enjoying picnic parties from morning till night.  Now it is all quiet.

今日の最高気温は26度で、何を着て出かければよいのか分からないほど。

The maximum temperature reached 26℃ today and the direct sun was almost painful on the skin.

桜のあとはハナミズキ。赤花の木が咲き始めていました。

With cherry trees on their way out, dogwoods are coming into season. 

グラニースミス開花 Granny Smith blossom

 楽しみにしていたグラニースミスの花が咲き始めました。大輪でとても綺麗です。他の紅玉や紅の夢の開花はまだまだ先のことですが、この品種は自家結実性が高いそうなので安心です。でも、念のため、梵天を持って公園のアルプス乙女の花粉を採取してきました。

The first flower of Granny Smith, at last.  The flower is very large and pretty.  The flower buds of other 2 varieties I have are nowhere near opening yet.  Fortunately, according to a site overseas, this variety is self-fertile. 

初夏の気分 Feels like early summer

 今朝は良く晴れて日差しが強いなかでの散歩でした。タイガは今朝は公園ではなく住宅街を歩くことにしました。タイガが年をとってからは、ワンコの行きたいところへ私がついて行っています。今朝は隣の６丁目。わずかに残っている畑の横を通りました。

A fine morning with strong sun light, which reminded me of an early summer morning.  Taiga wanted to walk through the neighbourhood this morning, instead of going to the park.  As Taiga became old, I have been allowing her to choose whatever direction she wanted to go.  This morning, we walked through the neighbouring district where there was a farm field - one of the very few left in our area.

ここは孤高の美しいケヤキの木を眺められるので、私の好きな通り道です。

This path is my favourite walk, since I love looking at this solitary ancient tree from a distance - a Japanese zelkova.

新緑の葉っぱが朝日を浴びてキラキラしています。

The new leaves were glittering in the morning sun.

その近くの民家では、数週間前に見たオリープの幼果そっくりの実が色づき始めていました。ブログ友の海月ファームさんに教えてもらったのですが、これは「ウスギモクセイ（薄黄木犀）」と言うのだそうです。他所では見たことのない珍しい花木です。

Nearby, I saw the very rare variety of the fragrant olive tree with fruits on it.  I learnt about this version several weeks ago, when a blogger friend told me about it.

＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

うちの珍しい植物は、西洋サンシュユ（コーネリアンチェリー）のカザンラク。普通のコーネリアンチェリーよりも実が大きく、またデザート用になるほど甘味と香があるそうです。将来、たくさん生ったら生食用だけでなくジャムにもしたいです。

This is my rare tree - a cornelian cherry tree 'Kazanlak', developed in Bulgaria.  Its fruits are larger than normal cornelian cherries, and they are sweet and fragrant, suitable for dessert use.  I am so looking forward to actually seeing the fruits.

リンゴのグラニースミスの蕾が膨らんできました。昨日までは中心の一番大きな蕾に、ピンク地に白いスジがらせん状に入っていて、とても綺麗でした。

The flower buds of Granny Smith apple are getting close to opening.  They are so pretty.  Until yesterday, the largest bud in the middle had white spiralling streaks against the backdrop of deep pink.

「紅の夢」の蕾は遅れがちですが、だんだんと赤味が見えてきました。

The red-flesh apple, 'Kurenai-no-Yume' is way behind Granny Smith, but starting to show the red petals.

私があまり植物のことに没頭しているので、タイガがつまらなさそうな顔をしています。

As I was totally absorbed in observing the plants, Taiga was trying to catch my eyes.

フィンガーライム Finger limes

 マイナンバーカード更新の時期なので、チャリをこいで練馬区役所へ行ったあと、ついでに家とは反対方向にある渋谷園芸本店まで足を延ばしました。行かなければよかったものを、見てはいけないものを見てしまった。フィンガーライムの新苗が入荷していました。

I had to go to the Nerima Ward Office this afternoon for some paperwork, after which I went further to visit a large plant shop.  In spite of my resolve not to buy any more new plants, since I have no more space left in my tiny garden, I happened to see what I should not have done - new finger lime plants had just come in.

この棚にある品種では、ダラムエメラルドは以前、高い苗を買って枯らしてしまいました。他は自分で育てたことのない品種ばかりです。どれも小苗で2,400円ですが、ちゃんと蕾が出ています。

Among these little plants, Durham Emerald is the only one I have had the experience of growing.  I started with 8 different varieties many years ago, but one by one they died and now I am left with only 3: Mia Rose, Rick's Red, and a white seedling.  

The plants on this shelf are quite small - about 40cm.

こちらの苗は樹高は同じくらいでも、もう少し充実した枝ぶりで蕾の量も多く、値段はさっきの2倍。

There was another shelf with slightly more mature plants with more flower buds, but hardly taller than the small ones.  The price of these were twice that of the smaller ones.

開花が始まっている苗もあります。

Some of them are already starting to bloom.

私の楽しみは安く小さく買って大きく育てることなので、小苗のほうばかり持ち帰りました。

現在うちで生き残っている苗は、ミアローズ、リックスレッド、実生の白実です。収穫実績のあるのは、値段が一番安く大苗で買った実生の白だけ。

I find it more fun to buy cheap, small, and grow big.  So, I brought home 3 small ones.  

こぢんまりと剪定されているので小さく見えますが、出荷直前まではもっと大きかったはずです。

They may look very small, but I can see that they were trimmed down to the current sizes just before being shipped out of the nursery.
